fucking dog.

molly damn near gave me a heart attack today. but it was partly my fault. ugh.

she kicks it for most of the day in the sun room/living room. there are two doors that lead into this room from the rest of the house, both partially closed off with these funky ass cut-in-half swinging doors (the lady who owns this house had two greyhounds - big ass dogs). and if you don't make sure that the locks are latched properly, she'll poke her little nose out and creep out into the house and run like there's no tomorrow. it's usually pretty funny, but she's actually made it outside once or twice, which isn't fabulous considering our house is on a busy ass street. you can't tell from this picture, but trust me. cars are always whizzing by at top speed.

anyway, i got home with the bean from gymboree class - which always means a target run, and a stop at trader joe's. she was snoozing, so i was unloading the car as fast as i could, leaving the door between the garage and the house open. i got all the bags in the house, pulled the car seat out, and shut the garage door.

and then i saw it - one of the doors partially open. shit.

i put the bean down, checked in the teen's room, looked under our bed, in the nursery - all of molly's favorite hiding spots - and nothing. fuck.

checked the garage, ran outside and looked up and down the street - no dog. called out for her, watched for any sign, and nothing.

and then i was paralyzed - i seriously didn't know what the hell to do. i went back in the house, looked in all her hiding spots again, and reached for my phone. the hub is on the east coast, having left last night on a business trip with clients, so i don't know what good that would've done. but i needed to hear his calm, reassuring voice.

sadly, he didn't pick up, and i was getting all choked up, imagining life without molly, freaking out at the prospect of her ignorant ass getting run over by a car on the always-busy street. i pulled the drapes open to take another look, and then i saw it - a flash of white fur streaking across the front yard.

ohmyfreakinggoshholyshitthankyoulord. there she was.

i ran out, called her in the most loving voice (because she was sure to think i was gonna beat her ass for this one), and she tore across the yard again and ran into our neighbor's yard. i trotted my relieved ass over there, called her again, and this time she came right to me and rolled over at my feet.

i picked her up, gave her a big ol' hug, and brought her inside, where the bean was still snoozing in her seat. after she took a nice long drink of water, she scampered under the table and plopped her tired, wheezing ass down.

all's well that ends well. phew.

  1. Growing up my 3 dogs would pull that shit all the time. They would run WILD if they had the chance to get out. It was always major stress to get them back home. Damn dogs.

Happy Molly made it home safely

  3. I used to hate having to run after our dogs when they tried to escape when I was little. Molly's a lucky mutt. Now stay your ass home, Molly!

  8. ohhhh, happy day for molly. our molly is not street-smart; she never learned that streets have cars. she'll wander right off the sidewalk, sometimes to take a poop, if she feels like it. i can't trust her off a leash, either. she does come when she's called, at least. the nice thing is that she doesn't run off because she can't be without her mama. ;) glad your momo is ok.
